Apartheid: The kickstarter lesson

To learn more about the setting of the new book we will be studying, 'Journey to Jo'Burg', today the class learnt about apartheid the hard way!

When we came in, the children were randomly given badges, some red and some green. They were separated and the green badge holders were treated badly. They were not helped and were told they were naughty. The reds were praised, and did not get in trouble at all. This was to show the differences between being black and being white in Apartheid South Africa.

Afterwards we discussed how it had made us feel:
"It is a scary world!" -Baikoon (Green)
"I felt cheated!" -Nate (Green)
"It was strange; we were separated from our friends." -Nana (Red)
"It was great! I felt awesome!" -Asira (Reds prefect)
